Siegfried riding into Worms over a bridge is the moment this still captures from Fritz Lang's 1924 film *Siegfried*, the opening part of *Die Nibelungen*. The city is the seat of the Burgundian court in the story, drawn from the medieval epic the *Nibelungenlied*, which dates to about 1200. The Berlin studio Decla-Bioscop, which produced the film, registered the photograph for copyright that same year. The legend was familiar to German audiences of the 1920s, and the film's elaborate sets and stylized staging give its medieval world a deliberately monumental look.
