Pedestrians once crossed the East River on the Manhattan Bridge along elevated footpaths set apart from the roadway, and this view records those walkways while the span was still taking shape. The bridge opened in December 1909, linking Lower Manhattan with Brooklyn and easing the crowding on the older Brooklyn Bridge. The photograph is one of many taken by the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency whose glass-plate and print collection now sits in the Library of Congress. Its caption card, which the archive notes is unverified, dates it to roughly 1907 to 1915.
