Whistler's etching shows the old Hungerford suspension bridge spanning the Thames in London, a structure that opened in the 1840s and was later replaced by a railway crossing. He made a series of river views like this in the early 1860s, often working quickly from the banks and from boats. Here the bridge's chains and piers dissolve into loose, sketchy lines and shifting light over the water. The card gives no date, but the subject places the work just before the old bridge was taken down. Notice how little Whistler needed to suggest the busy riverfront.
