Captain Isaac Hull's frigate *Constitution* is the ship at the center of this scene, which shows her action against the British frigate HMS *Guerriere* off Nova Scotia on August 19, 1812. Hull's victory came early in the War of 1812, and it gave American spirits a much-needed lift after a run of naval setbacks. The ship's sturdy oak hull earned her the nickname "Old Ironsides" after the battle. This color halftone reproduces a painting by Rufus F. Zogbaum, a marine artist known for dramatic naval subjects, and it was published around 1898 by the Frederick A. Stokes Company.
