In 1912, Hannibal was a Marion County city whose economy still rested on the river and on the railroads that had grown up beside it, with freight yards handling grain and livestock and limestone quarried from the bluffs above the water. Local politics that summer had a national edge. Champ Clark, a Missouri Democrat from neighboring Pike County who was Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, was a leading candidate for his party's presidential nomination, and he lost to Woodrow Wilson at the Baltimore convention in July after a long deadlock. Residents would have measured their town by its schools, churches and downtown merchants, and by the lumber, coal and goods that moved through its depots each week. The city's growth was steady rather than sudden, shaped by the same river traffic and rail lines that had defined it for half a century.
