A crowd gathered in St. Louis in 1908 for William Howard Taft, the Republican nominee that year, and this glass negative captures the size of the turnout. Political gatherings of the period often filled streets and public squares, with people arriving by streetcar and on foot, and photographers working for agencies such as the Bain News Service supplied images to newspapers eager for them. The title comes from information the agency recorded on the negative or its caption card and has not been independently verified, so the exact location and occasion are worth checking. Taft won the presidency that November.
