This lithograph leads with the maracas and dancing figures, which set its message of Cuban music and leisure apart from the tourist posters of the period that relied on beaches or city skylines. The poster was printed in Havana around 1935 by Artes Gráficas, S. A., and it reflects the 1930s push to draw American and other foreign visitors to the island. Its creator, Conrado Massaguer, was a Cuban illustrator and caricaturist, and his bold, stylized figures show the graphic style he brought from magazine work. Maracas, the hand-held rattles central to son and rumba, make the poster a useful record of how Cuban popular music was packaged for outside audiences.
