The record names a man, David Fultz, but gives no date and notes that the title comes from caption cards and has not been verified, so the sitter's identity and the occasion remain uncertain. The glass negative is one of the Bain News Service plates, which George Grantham Bain began building in New York around 1899 to supply newspapers with news photographs. Those plates, mostly made in the first two decades of the twentieth century, record a wide range of people and events, and the Library of Congress holds the collection. Because the negative is a glass plate, its surface detail and tonal range are a good reminder of how early news photography was made.
