Few structures along the Panama Canal were as central to its operation as the spillway at Gatun, which regulates the water level of the artificial lake that feeds the canal's locks. Completed in 1913, the earthen dam holds back the Chagres River to form Gatun Lake, and the spillway releases excess water to keep the lake at a steady height for ships passing between the oceans. This glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that sold pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and it records an engineering project that was among the largest of its time.
