Rather than a single foreign visitor, this sheet shows Americans in Western dress and family groupings, a subject that set it apart from the warriors and actors that dominated Japanese woodblock prints of the period. Its title, *Amerika*, and its signature to Issen Yoshikazu place it around 1861, a few years after Japan opened its ports to foreign trade in 1859 and Westerners began settling in Yokohama. Printmakers of the time produced images like this to satisfy public curiosity about newcomers, and clothing, hats, and mannerisms were often rendered with a mix of close observation and exaggeration. The sheet is worth studying as a record of early contact seen through a Japanese artist's eyes.
