Few pictures from Herbert Hoover's first winter in office show him leaving the White House with two of his aides, George Akerson and Walter Newton, on December 27, 1929. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented official life in the capital for decades, made this image on a glass negative. Such negatives often develop streaks and blemishes as their coatings break down over time, so the picture can look softer than it did when first taken. That wear is itself worth noticing, since it shows how much these early press photographs have survived.
