Clarence Darrow, the Chicago lawyer known for defending unpopular clients, is the subject of this plate, taken at the Cosmos Club, the private social club on Lafayette Square for members drawn from science, literature, and public affairs. The National Photo Company made the glass negative in March 1925, only a few months before Darrow took part in the Scopes trial in Tennessee that summer. The company photographed Washington's institutions and visitors for decades, so the plate offers a glimpse of the capital's social life in the mid-1920s. Streaks and other blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of its original coating.
