A dance instructor, Miss Vivian Marinelli, is shown teaching the Charleston to basketball players from the Palace Club in Washington, D.C., on February 15, 1926. The Charleston had swept American dance floors only a few years earlier, spread by Broadway revues and the jazz age's taste for fast, loose-limbed steps, so seeing it taught to athletes rather than professional dancers makes the scene unusual. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded city life and public events from the 1910s through the 1930s.
