Griffith Stadium was the home grounds of Washington's ball club, and this group portrait records the players gathered there for an opening game in 1918. The picture belongs to the National Photo Company's large body of Washington work, made by a firm that documented the city's streets, public buildings and daily life in the early twentieth century. Posed team portraits like this one were a staple of newspaper and promotional photography at the time, and the arrangement shows how clubs presented themselves to the public. The United States was at war that year, and the baseball season was shortened, which adds a layer of context to the scene.
