This panoramic view shows the Boston ball grounds, the field where the city's professional club played in the decades after the Civil War. Wide formats like this were well suited to baseball parks of the period, which were built around open outfields and crowded wooden grandstands, so a single exposure could capture the whole diamond along with the spectators. Boston's clubs were among the earliest professional teams, and the ballpark was a gathering place for crowds that followed the game closely. The picture is a useful record of how the grounds were laid out and how the game was watched in its early professional years.
