Rather than centering on a single Massachusetts town, this map sweeps across the northeastern coast, from the far reaches of New England down to the lands the Dutch called New Netherland, which the title folds into New York. Maps of this kind were drawn in the 1600s, when European cartographers were still piecing together coastlines and interiors from explorers' reports, so rivers, place names and boundaries often shift from one edition to the next. Today the appeal lies in seeing how colonists and their rivals pictured the region before modern surveys settled its borders. It makes a useful companion to the city views on this board, which show the settlements that grew out of that wider landscape.
