Its title, Latin for "New England," points to the early English name for the region that later became the six New England states, with Massachusetts at its center. In the 17th century, mapmakers and promoters used the name for the coast from the Penobscot to the Hudson, and maps of this kind often mixed careful coastline surveys with guesses about the interior. Massachusetts Bay, settled by English colonists beginning in 1630, was the colony that most shaped how the name was used. Look closely at the place names and the decorative cartouches, since they show how Europeans pictured the land and whom they expected to claim it.
