Few pictures in this gallery show the inside of a working building, and this one focuses on the hoisting gear in the attic of Building B at the George Delano & Sons Oil Works in New Bedford. New Bedford grew rich on whaling in the nineteenth century, and oil works like this one refined whale oil into lamp fuel and lubricants. Pulleys and lifts like the one shown moved heavy casks and materials between floors, so the equipment reveals how the work was done by hand and muscle before powered systems became common.
