A winter art show at the New Bedford Free Public Library, running from January 25 to February 7, 1938, was organized under the WPA Federal Art Project, which the Works Progress Administration had started in 1935 to employ artists during the Depression. Libraries and schools were common venues for these shows, which brought the work of local and project artists to residents who might never visit a museum. This exhibition also offered lectures alongside the displays. New Bedford, a former whaling port on Massachusetts' southeastern coast, provides the setting for this record of the program's work in the city.
