Few mountains in Europe were tied to the railroad as quickly as the Rigi, and this albumen print records one of its lines. The Rigi Railway opened in 1871 as one of the first rack railways in Europe, using a toothed center rail to haul trains up steep slopes above Lake Lucerne. Travelers rode to the summit for views that drew visitors from across the continent. The print comes from a travel album whose other pages cover Athens, Egypt, the Rhine, and the Tyrol, a reminder of how well-worn the tourist circuit had become by the late nineteenth century.
