Tan-y-Bwlch, a station on the Festiniog Railway in north Wales, is the focus here, with the narrow-gauge line winding through the valley. The railway was built in the 1830s to carry slate from the quarries at Blaenau Ffestiniog down to the coast at Porthmadog, and by the late 1800s it was also drawing visitors who came for the mountain scenery. The print is a photochrom, a color process that combined a photograph with lithographic color, and it was issued by the Detroit Publishing Company as part of a series of views of Wales sold to tourists and collectors.
