A tunnel driven into the rock marks the Canyon copper mine in this view, which the caption card identifies with a ledge called Mineral Ledge. Around 1906, prospectors were staking claims on copper showings in and around the canyon, hoping to move ore out by mule or boat over steep, slow trails. Most of these workings stayed small because hauling ore out of the gorge often cost more than the metal was worth. The caption's details have not been independently verified, so the exact location and date are best read as the card's own account.
