A tornado, rather than a building or a person, is the subject of this c1902 print, which records a storm over Lebanon, a small farming town in north-central Kansas. The town sits near the geographic center of the contiguous United States, a fact that gives it a modest place in the state's history. Storm photographs from this period are uncommon, since cameras were bulky and tornadoes arrived without warning, so the image offers a rare glimpse of how a funnel looked to people on the ground in the early twentieth century.
