The cathedral shown here stands in Quito, the highland capital of Ecuador in Pichincha province, facing the Plaza Grande at the heart of the colonial city. Construction began in the 1500s, and the building had been shaped by centuries of additions, repairs and earthquake damage by the time this picture was made. UNESCO recognized Quito's historic center as a World Heritage Site in 1978, and photographs from the 1930s and 1940s like this one document a city still organized around its churches and squares. The stone facade and open plaza show how the cathedral anchored civic life.
