The negative sleeve carries the caption "Jno. Phillip Sousa," the abbreviated form of John Philip Sousa, the composer and bandleader known as "The March King." Sousa led the United States Marine Band before forming his own touring ensemble in 1892, and his marches made him one of the most recognized musicians in the country. The record dates the glass negative to about 1923, placing it in the period when the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio, was making portraits of prominent figures. Viewers should note the streaks and blemishes across the plate, which come from the natural deterioration of its original coatings.
