The name on this glass negative is Guy W. Hardy of Colorado, though the record notes that the title came from unverified data written on the negative or its sleeve, so the sitter's identity remains provisional. The plate is dated to roughly 1918 to 1921, when the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm known for its large body of photographs of people and places, was producing many negatives of this size. Herbert A. French gave the plate to the Library of Congress in 1947. Streaks and blemishes across the surface come from natural deterioration of the original coatings, which is worth keeping in mind when judging the image.
