Theodore Roosevelt is the sitter in this glass negative, which came out of the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. The Bain News Service was a Manhattan photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of public figures in the early twentieth century, and its negatives were often captioned in a hurry, so the identification here comes from the agency's own notes rather than from a verified date. Roosevelt, who served as president from 1901 to 1909, was among the most photographed men of his era, and portraits like this one from the Bain files show how newspapers built a public image of him. The record gives no exact date, so the picture is best read as part of that larger body of work.
