Its title, which translates roughly as "To lend to one's country is to fight from behind the lines," presents buying war bonds as a form of service. Signed V. Prouvé and dated 1917, this red lithograph dates from a time when France financed much of the war through public loans, and posters like it were meant to persuade ordinary citizens to invest their savings. It is entry number 66 in a printed checklist of posters from the period, which makes it useful for researchers tracing how the French state appealed to civilians during the conflict.
