Rather than a portrait or a scene from daily life, this color lithograph takes its title from an old legend about a man condemned to wander the earth until the Second Coming. Joseph Keppler, the Vienna-born cartoonist who founded the satirical weekly *Puck*, drew the design, and it ran across two pages of the January 9, 1901, issue. Keppler and his partner Adolph Schwarzmann copyrighted it, and the magazine's color cartoons were a major attraction for its readers. The catalog details come from an older caption card and have not been independently verified, so the scene's specific meaning is best checked against the magazine itself.
