The title borrows from Jacob Riis's 1890 book *How the Other Half Lives*, which exposed the overcrowded tenements of New York, and applies its phrase to a crowded Hebrew district of the city. Around 1907, the Lower East Side was one of the most densely populated neighborhoods anywhere, home to many Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. Stereograph cards like this one held two slightly offset photographs that a stereoscope fused into a single three-dimensional view, so viewers could feel they were standing in the street.
