The north front of the Executive Mansion, as the White House was then called, appears here in a salted paper print dated June 7, 1859. It belongs to the album kept by Benjamin Brown French, a Washington figure who served as commissioner of public buildings and who gathered photographs of the capital's major structures. Salted paper prints like this one were made from paper negatives, a process that gave early views a soft, warm tone and a texture quite unlike later silver prints. Pictures of the Executive Mansion from this decade are valuable today for showing the building and its grounds before the changes of the Civil War years.
