This color woodcut presents Sir Richard Arkwright (1732-1792), the English inventor, as its subject, a striking choice for a Japanese print. Arkwright's water frame, patented in 1769 and put to use at his Cromford mill in 1771, helped turn spinning into a factory process and became a foundation of Britain's Industrial Revolution. The record lists 1850 as the date, but the three artists named worked largely in the later nineteenth century, when Japan was opening to Western ideas and its printmakers often turned to foreign subjects and new machinery. The date may therefore be approximate, and the print is worth viewing as a window on that moment of cultural exchange.
