Here the joke turns on a dog playing the part of a man. "The young swell" was 1860s slang for a fashionable, overdressed young man about town, and the print gives that role to a canine. Hatch & Co. worked from Broadway in New York, where the Herald Building stood on the city's busiest and most fashionable street. Lithographs like this were inexpensive, quickly produced and meant for amusement, so they often poked fun at the dress and manners of the day. The humor depends on the viewer recognizing the slang.
