*The Ferry Boat* is a lithograph by Nathaniel Currier, printed in New York in 1847 from a design by F. Palmer, and it shows a crossing made by a working boat of the kind that carried travelers and goods across rivers and harbors. Currier's shop turned out large numbers of inexpensive prints in the 1840s, and its scenes of everyday life, travel, and sport were sold to a broad middle-class public. The print's place on this board suggests a dog is part of the scene, so it is worth looking for the animal among the passengers and in the foreground. The image is also a useful record of how ferries and their passengers appeared to the mid-century city-dwelling public.
