Henri Farman, the aviator pictured here, is shown after winning the Deutsch prize for aviation, a record dated January 13, 1908. That month he was one of the most closely watched pilots in France, and the prize honored a flight of about a kilometer in a closed circuit, a distance that showed a powered aircraft could steer and turn rather than simply leave the ground. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, whose news photographs were taken and printed quickly for newspapers, so it captures the press interest of the moment. Its glass negative and the caption, which the Bain service supplied without verification, are worth reading with that context in mind.
