A photograph of a wrecked car at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a track that opened in 1909, shows the danger that race drivers faced in the early years of American motor racing. Bob Burman was one of the best-known American drivers of the 1910s, admired for speed at tracks across the country and for taking big risks behind the wheel. He died in 1916 after a crash during a race in Corona, California. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, produced and captioned news pictures like this one, though the record does not give a date or the circumstances of this particular wreck.
