Three men are named in this view, J.J. Cole, Bob Fowler and W.F. Grundy, posed with a plane, so the subject is early aviation rather than a general scene. The title comes from caption information the Bain News Service wrote on its negatives, and the record gives no date, so the exact occasion is uncertain. Bain's photographers worked mainly in New York during the 1900s and 1910s, when powered flight was new and newspapers eagerly ran pictures of pilots beside their machines. Many early aviators built or repaired their own craft, so the men shown were likely part of that small, hands-on community.
