Bob Fitzsimmons, the Cornish-born boxer who held the heavyweight title in the 1890s, is the subject of this 8 by 10 inch glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection. Bain News Service, a Manhattan photo agency, produced and distributed pictures like this to newspapers from the early 1900s onward, so the plate captures the agency's working practice of supplying images of celebrated sporting figures to the press. The record's title comes from the caption cards and negative sleeves the agency used, which the Library of Congress notes are unverified, so the sitter's identification and the picture's date should be read with that caution in mind.
