The St. Regis, which John Jacob Astor IV opened at Fifth Avenue and 55th Street in New York in 1904, was among the city's most fashionable hotels, and this view shows its reception room. The picture comes from the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that recorded the city's hotels, theaters and street life in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified Bain caption data, so the exact year is uncertain. The room's formal, richly furnished interior reflects the style of luxury hotels of that era.
