Mary Garden, the Scottish-born soprano, is the subject of this glass negative, which the Bain News Service labeled as her role in "Sapho," Jules Massenet's opera based on Alphonse Daudet's novel about a Parisian artist's scandalous affair. Garden was closely associated with Massenet's work and sang the title role in American productions, drawing wide attention in the press. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan picture agency, sold news photographs to newspapers through the early twentieth century. Because the title came from caption cards the agency wrote itself, and the record notes it is unverified, the staging and date should be treated with some caution.
