Mary Garden, the Scottish-born soprano, is shown here in costume for the title role of Massenet's opera *Thaïs*, the part that became closely associated with her. In 1907 she performed it in New York at Oscar Hammerstein's Manhattan Opera House, where her portrayal drew wide press attention. The picture is a glass negative from the Bain News Service, a Manhattan agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its studio credit, H. Mishkin, points to the portrait practice of the period, when opera stars were photographed in character to promote their performances.
