An airplane identified as the work of W.L. Avery and D.W. Beatty is the subject of this glass negative, though the title comes from caption information the Bain News Service recorded on the plate and has not been independently verified. George Grantham Bain built his news photo agency in New York around the turn of the twentieth century, and its files capture aviation's rapid rise in the years before and after 1910, when airplanes were still new enough to draw crowds. The record gives no date, so the exact occasion is uncertain, but the negative fits a period when flying machines were being exhibited, flown, and photographed for newspaper readers.
