The title on this glass negative is simply a name, "J. Kilbane," taken from data the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card. The record does not say who that person was or what occasion produced the picture, and the title itself is unverified, so readers should treat the identification with caution. George Grantham Bain founded the agency in New York around 1899 to supply news photographs to newspapers, and its early twentieth-century glass negatives often carry handwritten captions that were not always checked. The 5 by 7 inch plate is a typical format of the period, and placing the picture in time would require the original caption wording.
