The Bain News Service title for this village points to fighting between Turkish and Montenegrin forces, though the Library of Congress notes that the title is unverified and the record gives no date. If the title is accurate, the scene may date to the Balkan Wars of 1912 and 1913, when Montenegro fought the Ottoman Empire, including a long siege of Scutari (Shkodra). Bain's agency supplied news photographs to newspapers, so images like this one were meant to show readers the aftermath of distant conflicts.
