This photograph shows a travois, a frame of two trailing poles and a cross-piece that was dragged behind a horse, used here as a improvised ambulance for carrying an injured man. Plains peoples developed the travois long before European contact, using it to haul tents, food, and children across open country. The U.S. Army borrowed the design for moving wounded soldiers where wheeled wagons could not travel. The caption's wording, "Indian ambulance," is a period label from the Bain News Service, and the record gives no date, so the exact occasion remains unverified.
