The record gives little beyond its title: German Army soldiers photographed in barracks, on a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain News Service, a Manhattan picture agency active from about 1899 into the 1920s, supplied many of the press photographs in this group, and its captions were often written quickly, so the title is noted as unverified. The image is a useful glimpse of daily military life in Germany during the early twentieth century, when the army's barracks were central to training and garrison routine. Bain's pictures of European subjects were sold to newspapers and magazines, so the print reflects how American readers were shown Germany before the First World War.
