This engraving of Plato comes from André Thevet's French collection of portraits of illustrious men, which pairs images of famous figures with short biographies. Thevet, a cosmographer and traveler, assembled the series in the late sixteenth century, when European readers were eager for likenesses of ancient writers and rulers. Plato (about 428 to 348 BCE) was an Athenian philosopher, Socrates' student, and founder of the Academy, one of the earliest organized schools in the Western world. Because no artist's likeness of Plato from life survives, the portrait reflects how Renaissance printmakers imagined the ancient thinker.
