Inez Milholland, the subject of this portrait, was one of the most recognizable faces of the American woman suffrage movement in the 1910s. A Vassar-educated lawyer and orator, she drew national attention in 1913 when she led the Woman Suffrage Procession in Washington, D.C., mounted on a white horse. She campaigned widely until her death in 1916 during a speaking tour in the West. The caption card gives no date for this photograph, so it is best read as a record of her public image during the final years of the suffrage campaign.
