A halftone reproduction of novelist Mary Johnston, published in *Harper's Weekly* on November 7, 1903, presents the Virginia writer at the height of her popularity. Johnston had become one of the best-selling American authors of her day after her historical romance *To Have and to Hold* appeared in 1900, and her later novels kept her name before magazine readers. Halftone printing let weeklies like *Harper's* reproduce photographs beside their text, so portraits like this one reached a wide audience within days of being made.
