Mary Carey Thomas is shown here in right profile, a half-length view that puts her sharp features and direct gaze on the page. As the second president of Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, she led the women's college from 1894 to 1922 and built it into one of the country's most respected institutions for women's higher education. She was also a strong advocate for women's suffrage and for opening professional training to women, and this portrait, dated to about 1919, dates from the later years of her long tenure.
